Farmers' Markets are a Local Summer Tradition
Carroll County has a rich and vibrant history filled with agricultural heritage. Gone, but not forgotten, are the numerous canning factories in every valley and glen that used to beckon for fresh sweet corn, string beans, peas, tomatoes and other vegetables from local farmers. Many folks still recall taking truckloads of produce to market in Baltimore or the days of driving the brand new green, yellow and red Oliver's, red Farmall's and green and yellow John Deere' with produce in tow to one of Westminster's largest canning factories, Shriver's.
Though those days are gone, some things never change. The Oliver 70's, Farmall M's and John Deere B's can still be seen lugging produce from field to field by Carroll produce farmers. Many farmers still grow large amounts of sweet corn, peas and snap beans under contract for larger, more efficient canning factories in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Today, Carroll is home to numerous retail produce stands and farmers' markets alike.
Beginning in June, five public farmers' markets will sell local fruits, vegetables, eggs, raw wool, baked goods, cut flowers, jams and jellies, honey, herbs, various perennials and annuals, vegetable plants and more. These markets, located in Westminster, Taneytown, Mt. Airy and Sykesville, offer the opportunity to get to know where your food comes from guaranteeing the freshest and most wholesome products available. Many of these public markets also accept WIC and Senior coupon checks.
Carroll County is also home to a broad array of private farm stands scattered throughout the county. Starting in June strawberries, blueberries, cherries and raspberries can be found to tempt your tastebuds. Healthy vegetables like broccoli, snap beans, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and squash are available as well. Prime season for fresh produce is from mid-summer through September.
In July the Carroll County Department of Economic Development will distribute the "Carroll County, Maryland Farmers' Markets 2007" brochure listing available markets within the county. The brochure will include approximate harvest dates for assorted fruits and vegetables and a locator map of farmers' markets in Carroll County.
